What is a conservatory?

When they first became popular conservatories were once used primarily as a greenhouse to tend to plants. In the 21st century, however, conservatories have grown in popularity once more and comprise glass or other transparent roofing and walls that are suitable for many purposes such as additional living spaces, sunrooms, playrooms, and open-planned dining areas.

What is an orangery?

From the 17th-19th centuries an orangery was a building dedicated to protecting fruit trees, such as orange trees, during the winter. These days, orangeries have similar purposes to conservatories in that property owners can extend their living space in style with a design that is different from typical conservatory styles.

Conservatory

  • Pitched, glazed roof with more than 75% glass.
  • Glazed walls, more than 50% glass.
  • Built against the main wall of the property.
  • Fully glazed frame.
  • Can be rectangle, P, or T-shaped.
  • Glazed structure, different in style to the house.

Orangery

  • Roofed with a central lantern, less than 75% glass.
  • Large, tall windows, less than 50% glass
  • Standalone or against the side of a property.
  • Brick-built corner pillars and/or walls.
  • Square or rectangular shape.
  • Similar in style to the house.

What are the differences between an orangery and a conservatory?

With home renovations on the rise, the lines between what an orangery is and what a conservatory is have become blurred. Here are some of the main differences between the two extension types…

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CONSERVATORIES AND ORANGERIES?

Multi-functional spaces

There are endless possibillites for how conservatories and organgeries can be used and, as they can be designed and installed to suit your bespoke requirements, you can decide how this unique space will function for you in the long term.

Long-lasting & structurally sound

These types of home extensions are built using high-quality materials which means that you can have the peace of mind that they will last well into the future. They also come with double-glazing, plumbing and electrics.

Versatile Design

With a braod selection of colours, styles, designs and finishes available, the customisation possibilities for our conservatories and orangeries are endless. From the lighting and flooring you choose, right down to the finish of your roof, everything is bespoke to you.

Increases property value

Conservatories and organgeries are seen as attractive features to potential buyers because of the hassle-free additional space that they offer to a property. Therefore, if you're thinking of selling soon or are investing in the future, they will increase the value of your home.

Is an orangery cheaper than a conservatory?

A conservatory will be cheaper to build than an orangery for several factors. Primarily because an orangery has more solid walls than a conservatory and will therefore be more complex to build and will use more materials. A simple uPVC conservatory can cost in the region of £5,000 however, an orangery (as the more expensive option) could be upwards of £15,000. We recommend getting in touch with us for a FREE quote.

Can I build a conservatory or orangery without planning permission?

Fortunately, you can build conservatories and orangeries without planning permission as they fall within the same set of ‘permitted development rights as any other home extension. The only exception to this would be if the structure takes up more than 50% of the land around your property.
